Owner Spotlight : J Nicolas Albukerk
I’m J. Nicolas Albukerk, owner of Albukerk & Associates a law firm specializing in litigation. Over twenty-five years we have recorded one of a kind or rare victories which supports our claim that we are your best chance to win.
A little something about myself:
I grew up and went to school in Dix Hills, New York and earned my law degree at Case Western Reserve School of Law, in Cleveland, Ohio. I have I have been the manager and principal litigator of Albukerk & Associates for the past 15 years where my goal has been exceptional results in the most challenging cases.
My first litigation experience was with my father, a pathologist and expert witness in 1983 at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Suffolk County New York where my father worked. I assisted my father and learned a variety of forensic tools, processes, and tests. In 1987, I interned as a full-time investigator with the Washington D.C. Public Defender’s Service. Working here as a teenager taught me that a case cannot be won without good facts, and good facts are obtainable only when one is completely immersed in the case. I was given a permanent position as an investigator by the public defender and awarded a certificate of outstanding service. After law school, I honed my litigation skills in the Cook County Public Defender’s Office before moving into private practice in 2002. The most enjoyable part of my work is obtaining good results for my clients.
On average, I work for eleven hours a day. A typical day begins with spending time with my kids because otherwise, I wouldn’t see them! Then I go to court to get updates, argue a motion or attend a trial. After my time at court, I return to the office and manage my staff by giving them directions as to what needs to be done. I also return phone calls and reach out to opposing counsels. At night, I research and write and usually go home late.
As a lawyer, it is my responsibility to assess cases, manage my staff, go to court and argue various parts of cases that are currently being litigated. The most important decisions I am faced with as the owner of the business are related to which cases I should and should not take. I use a complete understanding of the facts and law along with my virtues of diligence and sincerity to perform at my job. I attribute my success to dedicated long hours at work.
I value doing the right thing for people. I staunchly believe that more evidence will produce better outcomes in our criminal justice system. Unfortunately, the police department either destroys or makes evidence unavailable to litigants. I have been a part of a group of lawyers that have pushed for increased access to material evidence through a movement called the Chicago Civil Rights Project. We currently are suing the City of Chicago to make them preserve 911 recordings, which up until the beginning of 2017 were only preserved for 30 days.
When I’m not working, I enjoy riding my bike, playing with my kids, and skiing.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our litigation expertise in Chicago, Woodstock, McHenry County, Joliet, Kankakee and surrounding areas in Illinois, I invite you to get in touch. Please visit our website at www.albukerklaw.com.
